The safe alternative to Ebay

Read this blog post about the risks and problems of selling/renting via Ebay and how we do it better at Fainin. A brief overview of Fainin's Design-For-Trust in advance:

  1. 100% verified tenants lead to much less damage.
  2. If something does break, all transactions are insured up to €15,000 by ERGO in accordance with the terms and conditions.
  3. Our intelligent payment system blocks fake payment requests and can only be processed through our system.
  4. Reliability due to 100% verified participants with ID card or driving licence - renting via fake account is not possible!

Scams on Ebay

Have you ever wanted to sell or lend something on Ebay and received suspicious messages or were even robbed of your money or your advertised item? We explain the most common problems on Ebay.

Triangular scam

This scam strategy involves 3 parties, seller:in, buyer:in and scammer:in. The triangle scam works as follows: The scammer requests a product from a seller and copies the listing of this product at the same time. When a potential buyer inquires about the fraudster's product, the fraudster passes on the payment details of the actual seller. Unsuspectingly, the seller is happy about the money that has arrived, which he/she attributes to the fraudster. The seller sends the product to the fraudster, who then disappears and leaves the buyer without the item. What now? As a buyer, you often have the chance to get your money back, but the seller ends up without the goods and without the money.

ID forgery/theft of an existing ID

Often, as a buyer:in, you want to protect yourself by asking for a photo of your ID. But this does not necessarily make it safer. If your counterpart sends pictures of his ID on his own initiative, you should become suspicious. Often, Ebay fraudsters use a fake ID or steal someone else's identity. This theft of personal data usually also happens via Ebay, where the fraudsters themselves ask for a photo of the identity card in an alleged transaction. You should therefore also think about whether you want to give away your data in this way.

"Secure payment" - function hacked

Currently, it happens again and again that users select the "secure payment" function of Ebay when making a purchase. Even if this function really exists, in the case of fraud, a fake link is sent to a page that looks like an official Ebay page. There, you are supposed to enter your credit card details, which the website initially rejects. You are asked by the integrated customer service to choose another card. Watch out! This is a scam. In this case, you should have your credit card blocked as soon as possible.

Lending via Ebay not safe

A good alternative to Ebay is our sharing community Fainin. Here you can lend your things to others and earn money. With Fainin's design-for-trust, you don't have to worry about your stuff. In contrast to other lending platforms, user verification and product insurance are integrated.

No fraud when renting through Fainin

Our verification partner Sum-Sub verifies all users who want to rent your items. This requires an identity card or similar, which is verified with a selfie of the renter and stored in our system. This gives fraudsters no chance.

Better safe renting via Fainin

If your product is damaged during the rental period, it is covered by insurance through Ergo up to €15,000. The condition of the products is documented with photos during the transaction, so that no fraud can take place here either.
